The client / the challenge

Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) is a valued repeat client of ours. They are the Queensland Government’s land use planning and property development agency with the mission to help Queenslanders prosper. Over the years, we’ve worked with EDQ on posters, fact sheets and brochures, website content and design elements, infographics, articles and more.

EDQ have been doing a lot of exciting work in both the commercial and residential green development spaces, including the clean energy hub at the Gladstone State Development Area and creating sustainable, connected communities that people love to live in. A great example of their groundbreaking work is Carseldine Village, the first residential development in Queensland to deliver net zero-energy emission homes that come with a suite of sustainable, energy-saving products and features.

EDQ came to us for assistance with a speech they were planning to give at the Green Building Council Australia’s “Green Building Day” event. Carseldine Village had been awarded a highly-sought after 5 Star Green Star – Communities rating, and the speech was intended to not only promote the Carseldine Village development, but also inspire other developers by demonstrating that sustainable building options are commercially viable. EDQ came to us as their experienced speaker didn’t have time to write the speech himself. They also required “attention-grabbing-yet-appropriate” visuals that would be easy for the presenter to use.

Our strategic solution

Following an in-depth interview with key staff, we recognised the need to strip the content down to the most effective points to give the presentation the greatest impact possible in the time allocated. We set out to write a speech and design a PowerPoint deck to help their Projects Developer for South-East Queensland Development to stand out and be heard.

At Lovehate Design+Brand, we love this Voltaire quote: “The best way to be boring is to leave nothing out.

We kept the speech engaging and succinct by choosing to home in on Carseldine Village’s mission: to deliver affordable housing, create jobs and lead the way as an exemplar for other sustainable communities.

This became the yardstick for the speech: if content didn’t serve this goal, then we edited it out.

We outlined the challenges faced at Carseldine Village in making a sustainable community a reality and then showed how EDQ came up with innovative solutions to overcome these challenges.

We centred on five key initiatives to represent the many groundbreaking innovations at Carseldine Village to keep the audience from becoming overwhelmed by too many facts and figures while simultaneously implying the detailed thinking that went into every element of this sustainable development.

And while the facts can speak for themselves, we also made sure to employ a technical-yet-inspirational tone and language throughout.

As the last words of a presentation are proven to be the easiest for the audience to recall, we always recommend our clients end any speech on their main point, never on the “thank you”.

We add a “thank you” earlier, of course. But we structured the conclusion of this speech to restate the Carseldine Village outcome as well as EDQ’s mission …

Our design approach for the PowerPoint slides referenced the optimism of EDQ’s message.

We built upon the visual language of renewable energy via deep blue skies and green trees to frame the content of the speech.

Big bold typography communicated the essence of each part of the speech in as few words as possible to aid audience comprehension.

And where a lot of words were absolutely necessary, we structured the content to reveal gradually

so the audience could take it in one point at a time (rather than try to recall numerous separate points).

The speech went really well, thank you!!!

The team were really happy with what you produced for us and have gone on to use the slide pack for many other presentations.
