The client / the challenge

Afterglow Lighting came to us when they were quite new to running their own company, offering lighting design, installation and technical support for residential and small business customers. Fresh out of university, the three specialist owners of the business were skilled in lighting design as well as the techy side of lighting. They were seeking a website and other collateral to help them establish their credibility right away and were hoping to appeal to high-end Sydney customers. They had a website that they weren’t happy with. They felt the content and user experience of their preexisting site were disjointed from each other and also from the intent of their business plan.

We set out to design and write a website that would not only inform new clients about Afterglow’s services, but that would establish them instantly as credible and talented in their field and help them grow their client base. We knew just how to help Afterglow Lighting stand out, be heard and grow.

Our strategy for the initial website we designed and wrote for Afterglow included appealing equally to residential and small commercial customers.

We created landing pages for each speciality – ‘residential’ versus ‘commercial’ lighting – as different language, key words and tone of voice are required to best appeal to each of our client’s ideal high-end customer types.

We used black or white backgrounds paired with warm photographic images of actual stores and residences Afterglow had lit.

Plus we added interactive before-and-after sliders which are fun to play with and also instantly demonstrate the Afterglow difference.

To tick the “high-end” box, we used a magazine-style layout (to bring to mind interiors and architecture magazines).

Our copywriter  ensured the language was a pleasure to read while highlighting the benefits to the customer at every point.

A couple of years later, Afterglow Lighting had grown to become experts in Casambi wireless lighting technology, which was better suited to large commercial lighting installations.

We helped this growing brand pivot their marketing to capture the attention of a new audience segment, starting with a complete website rewrite and redesign.

For the evolved Afterglow website, we featured a striking video homepage and imagery designed to appeal to larger commercial clients.

As Casambi wireless tech was their key offering, we mentioned Casambi on every page as well as on its own dedicated Casambi page.

To ensure brand legacy, we kept the structure of the page design similar – preserving bold titles and photographic header bars as well as a magazine-style layout throughout the site.

This way, we ensured that clients already familiar with Afterglow Lighting would recognise the site as still belonging to the brand.

We also evolved the language, imagery and styling across the site to better appeal to the brand’s new “larger commercial” ideal clients.

We did the site’s natural SEO so well using the right keywords at the correct densities that without any paid SEO or Google ads, Afterglow Lighting achieves the first results on Google for relevant terms such as “Casambi Sydney”.
